"Through the Glass Darkly" has an unconventional protagonist facing down more than just a small-town crime.
"Through the Glass Darkly" is a tight thriller that pulls you in from the first frame. Set in small-town Georgia in 1997, Charlie (played by Robyn Lively) is in search of her missing daughter, when another teen girl goes missing in the area. Though the two cases could be connected, no one seems interested in digging too deeply except for Charlie. The more questions she asks, the more people are too scared to say what they know, driving Charlie to cause trouble for the “big fish” in their little bowl.
The hunt for answers begins to challenge Charlie’s grip on reality, and the whiskey and pills aren’t helping. She forms an unlikely partnership — or rather an unlikely partnership is thrust upon her — by go-getter journalist Amy (played by Shanola Hampton,) who has her own reasons to see justice done. With an eye toward costume and props, the film’s creators truly capture the style and feel of the late 90s, where the internet wasn't the resource it is today, and Charlie and Amy have to dig things up one step at a time.
"Through the Glass Darkly" has an unconventional protagonist facing down more than just a small-town crime. Along the way, the film throws in several Shamlayan-style twists that will have you watching it over just to see the story in a new light.
